Vertigo and dizziness

Why physiotherapy for vertigo?

Many types of vertigo and dizziness come from the inner ear and the balance system. A physiotherapist trained in vestibular assessment can test which part of the system is involved, then use specific positioning techniques and exercises to treat it.

At Click Physiotherapy, vertigo and dizziness are assessed and treated by physiotherapist Reuben Vanderduys.

BPPV

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)

BPPV is one of the most common causes of vertigo. Tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear move out of place and into one of the balance canals. When you move your head in certain ways, the crystals shift and send the wrong signal to your brain, causing a short burst of spinning.

Common signs of BPPV

  • Brief spinning, usually lasting less than a minute, when you roll over in bed, get up, look up or bend down.
  • Symptoms triggered by changing position, rather than constant dizziness.
  • Nausea during an episode.
  • Feeling unsteady or off-balance afterwards.

How we test for it

We use specific positional tests, guiding your head and body into set positions while watching your eye movements. The pattern of eye movement shows which balance canal is involved and on which side.

How BPPV is treated

BPPV is treated with repositioning manoeuvres, such as the Epley manoeuvre. These are a series of guided head and body positions that aim to move the crystals back to where they belong, chosen to match the canal involved.

  • Some people need more than one session.
  • You may feel a little unsteady for a day or so afterwards.
  • We will explain what to do, and what to avoid, between sessions.
Vestibular rehab

Exercises for dizziness and balance

Not all dizziness is BPPV. After an inner ear infection, a concussion, or when dizziness has been around for a while, vestibular rehabilitation exercises help your brain adapt and recalibrate your balance system.

  • Gaze stabilisation: keeping your eyes focused on a target while moving your head, to train the reflex that keeps your vision steady.
  • Habituation: gently and repeatedly doing movements that bring on mild dizziness, so your brain gradually becomes less sensitive to them.
  • Balance training: standing and walking challenges, progressed safely, to improve steadiness and confidence.
  • Building activity back up: walking and everyday movements, progressed step by step.

These exercises can feel challenging at first, because they work by gently bringing on symptoms in a controlled way. Done regularly, they aim to reduce dizziness, improve balance and help you get back to your normal activities. Your program is set up in the Physiflow app so you can follow it at home.

A heartfelt thank you to the team at Click Physiotherapy! 💙 After suffering from lower back pain for weeks, I was initially hesitant to book because of the distance—but I’m so glad I decided to go ahead. From the lovely, welcoming receptionist to my therapist, Callum, I’ve felt supported and cared for. Callum has been professional, compassionate and understanding. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better physiotherapist. Their app has also been fantastic, making it easy to access my prescribed exercises and stretches at home. Booking appointments has always been straightforward, and the team has been so accommodating with my preferred times. When you’re dealing with ongoing pain, kindness and support make such a difference. Thank you, Callum and the Click Physio team, for helping me through my recovery. Click Physio has got me covered! 🙌💙

I came to Click Physiotherapy needing treatment for an injured rotator cuff. Laura has been my primary physio and she has been excellent with her approach in addressing my injury. She has listened attentively to my concerns and questions and created an individualised rehabilitation program that is working well. I have to say that everyone at Click Physio that I have had contact with has been very professional and supportive. I highly recommend Click Physiotherapy for anyone needing help with their physical health. Also wanted to give a shout out to another talented physio named Reuben who has been a pleasure to work with.
